23rd Sabah Dragon Boat Race

July 22nd, 2008 admin Posted in Events | 1 Comment »

Long, long time ago. In a galaxy far, far away…

Eh wait, wrong script… kof kof.

Long long time ago, in China. There was a poet by the name of Chu Yuen. Chu Yuen was a minister in one of the states of southern state of Chu, a champion of political loyalty & integrity, he was a victim of jealous corrupted officials which had him exiled.

Chu Yuen during his time of exiled supposedly wrote many great poetry & odes. But by the year 278 B.C., upon learning that his state was invaded & devastated by a neighboring Warring state (Qin in particular), Chu Yuen committed suicide by the Miluo river.

Hoping to rescue him, the common folks in the area raced their boats to try retrieve his body. Beating drums & paddling hard to scare away the fishes (this then became the beginning of the Dragon Boat Race). Dumplings were thrown to appease the great poet’s spirit. In commemoration of Chu Yuen, people hold the dragon boat race annually on the day of his death.

Today, dragon boat festivals continue to be celebrated around the world with dragon boat racing, although such events are still culturally associated with the traditional Duan Wu festival which is the 5th day of the 5th Chinese lunar month.

15th June 2008 at the Likas Bay, Kota Kinabalu. We witnessed the 23rd Sabah Dragon Boat Race. Many came to participate in this dragon boat race & we even had teams coming from as far as Brunei, Penang & even China!

A total of 57 teams gathered to compete for a place among 6 categories, this includes The Sabah Head of State’s Trophy, The Sabah Chief Minister’s Trophy, SCCA President Trophy (Men’s Team), SCCA President Trophy (Mix Team), The Sabah Dragon Trophy & Sabah Tourism Trophy.

Here are some pictures of the event itself!

It rain half way during the event, but the participant were determined to race against one another & brave the choppy wave! Of course, fighting against mother nature resulted with some boats experiencing capsize.

However the organisers reacted very quickly & were already at the scene, the moment they spot trouble! Good job to the organisers!

There were a few really tight competition during the race. 1 in particular that got our heart racing was the Sabah Head of States Trophy! The difference in time of the winner, 2nd place & 3rd was exactly 1 second!!!

THE FINAL RESULTS:

Sabah Head of State Trophy

10 STAR SERVICE~!!! ;)

July 7th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Through out the month of June, we had the privilege of witnessing a “10 Star Service“. What do I mean by that? Well we were visited by 10 Hong Kong Super Stars at 1Borneo! :D

Watching Hong Kong Drama series have always been apart of the “Malaysian” life stlye. Families would gather by the TV every 6pm. Everyone would tune into their favourite channel & watch Hong Kong drama like a religion. Hong Kong drama series have come to represent many things but most importantly it’s about: family gathering & recreation.

This was why fans were overjoyed when they heard that 10 Hong Kong drama superstars would appear through out the month of June! Starting from the 8th of June till the 29th June 2008, we were visited & entertained by Hong Kong TV drama actors & singers like:

Michael Tong

Akina Hong

Ella Koon

William So

Angela Tong

Bobby AuYong

Benny Chan

Joe Ma

Joel Chan

& YoYo Mung

8th June, soft launching saw the 1st 6 of the 10 HK stars:Bobby AuYong, Ella Koon, Akina Hong, Michael Tong, William So & Angela Tong.

On the 22nd June, we had Benny Chan accompanied by Karen Kong (our local Malaysian artist)

& Finally on the 29th June, we were visited by another 3 famous Hong Kong idol: Actor/singer Joe Ma, Yoyo Mung & Joel Chan.

The Hong Kong idols all have a few things in common! They can sing… and

they can play with the fans!

The stars like to get the crowd involve & you get to see their friendly side when they bring fans up stage to join them in some games.

Like this game, where the objective of the game is to “sandwich” a bread that will drop in between 2 person. If the 2 participant manage to keep the bread in between them, then they are worthy of some lucky prizes!

Sounds simple?

Here’s the catch~~~ they’ll have to do this with random body parts depending what they draw from a bowl. Thus you’ll get funny situation where 1 fella has to stop the bread with his butt, while another with his face… XD The idols weren’t afraid to join in the fun & demonstrate! XD

(The little girl has to catch the bread with her tummy… Benny with his butt…)

Even funnier watching the fans play it onstage! XD

(I hope the lady’s boyfriend wont bring a gun! XD)

There was this other game where a random (non-mandarin speaking) member of the crowd gets pulled up & have to imitate / sing what he hears in the headphones…

while the fans on stage have to guess “what incarnation is this guy singing~!!!???” XD

Everyone gets a prize for playing the game with the stars…

The idols were also very sporting, coming down from stage & greets everyone, shacking hands & giving every fan a smile. :D

There might be more Hong Kong artist coming even after the month of June & LifeBuzz will keep you updated if we get any news on this! ALSO, DO check out GoShopTV on 1Borneo soft launching if you cant get enough of the Hong Kong artist (wow~ now you’re really a fanatic)! XD

“I Too Can Be A Star!” The Ballet Concert.

June 19th, 2008 admin Posted in Events | 2 Comments »

Sparks KK together with Alpha Ballet School, JCI (Junior Chamber International Intan (Malaysia)) & Co-sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken, presented the “I Too Can Be A Star” Ballet Concert at the Tun Raffae Auditorium in Yayasan Sabah.

The concert was a fund-raising activity for the Kiwanis Down’s Syndrome Foundation of KK to build their new centre. The event had a positive turnout of about 500 viewers & the crowd can consider themselves very lucky to be given a chance to witness this one night of enchanting performance…

AND not forgetting, a FREE meal of KFC Zinger Burger… huhuhu…

The ballet dancers range from different age groups… some as young as 3 years old!!!

It was the 1st time I witnessed a ballet concert that picked non-classic soundtrack to dance to like: Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty“, “The Candy Man” from Charlie & the chocolate factory, The opening theme song of the anime “Elfen Lied” & even the famous James Bond movie “From Russia with love“.

The Candy Man Can”

The selection of classical music, anime soundtrack & movie OST allows the concert to have a variety of dances: from slow & graceful movements… to exciting & energetic beats!

Below are some of the pictures from the ballet concert that night:

I was with Fara that night & I cant help but noticed she kept squealing about how cute the kid dancers were :D. As for me, I was more concern how the dancers balance themselves with their tip toe & keeping their composure on stage!!! It takes a feat to do this!!! o.o

At the end of the show, parents children & audience came down to take pictures with all the cute dancers!

Even Fara rushed to have 2 of the dancers take a picture with her!

“I Too Can Be A Star!” Ballet Concert was a great show! I found myself wanting more even when the show ended. A big salute to all the organisers for this event!

Hope to see you all again soon!

Maybe I’ll give ballet a try … … … errrr… never mind lah ^^”

(“I Too Can Be A Star!” Ballet Concert is brought to you by SPARKS KK, Alpha Ballet School, organised by JCI (Junior Chamber International Intan (Malaysia)) & co-sponsored by Kentuky  Fried Chicken.)
