Feature Animation: There She Is! (Korean)

January 15th, 2009 Rina Cat Posted in Animations, Illustrations/Comics, flash | No Comments »

“A story about a forbidden love with hilarious moments.”

There She Is!! is a musical flash animation series produced by a three-person team and hosted in a Korean website, SamBakza. Although the first animation of the series was released on April 20, 2003, it didn’t become popular until early 2004 because of its exposure to American and European viewers.

The series attracted the audiences due to its high quality animations, which made the characters move more lively and fluidly. Thus encouraged the creators to continue making the series after its first animation.

Nabi (the male cat) and Doki (the female rabbit) from “There She Is!”

The plot revolves around a male cat named Nabi and a female rabbit named Doki in a world where love relationship between two different species is socially unacceptable.

In the first part of the series, it shows how Nabi and Doki first met and instantly had Doki heads over heel for Nabi (one of those ‘love at first sight’ kind of moment). Nabi however, was perpelaxed with the idea  (always tries to run away from her) and attempted to cure Doki’s infatuation for him.

Doki, not giving up, kept pursuing him and after Nabi sees the extent of her love,  he finally gives in and finds something he can appreciate in her.

It’s Doki’s birthday! And delivering a cake has never been this challenging!

In the beginning of Cake Dance, the second part of the series, Nabi had just purchased a birthday cake for Doki and all that’s left was to head down to Doki’s birthday party. Unfortunately for Nabi, fate just couldn’t leave him alone and he had to face some obstacles while delivering the cake which include a stampede (from out of nowhere) and a team of rogue rabbits when he accidentally bumped into one of them.

Some minor characters from the first animation made a reappearance in this second part with major makeovers and with bigger role.

Hint: If you click on the floating fish in the moon during the stampede scene, you will able to view the original comic starring Doki and Nabi (titled ‘Only You’) followed by thanks from the creator. This is only available in the English version of the animation, the Korean version gets something else.

Starting from Step 3 (the third part of the series), begins the more in-dept plot trilogy of sequels to the first two video animations.

This animation’s story portrays Nabi and Doki’s official first date (at least, according to Doki’s point of view). Once again, Nabi plays the role of the unwilling recipient of Doki’s love. Although later, throughout the date, Nabi begins to fall in love with Doki and he tries to hold her hand while they were watching in a cinema.

Hint: Clicking on the cloud on the top right of the loading screen will trigger an alternate opening that focuses on Doki making her way to Nabi’s house.

Time to face the real world.

Much darker story and darker in characters than the previous three, gone with the happy and cheerful songs, even the video was made in black and white (except for Nabi’s signature green scarf and the protest signs).

Just when our favourite protagonists’ love were starting to grow, troubles brewing in just around the corner and into their life. In this fourth chapter, step 4. Paradise, the protagonists have to face what it seems to be the bigger part of society, that are against intermarriage.

However, there are some that support the intermarriage and started their own small group of supporters (even the team of rogue rabbits joined in). But even this wasn’t enough to encourage Nabi to continue his relationship with Doki.

What will become of them now?…

After five years since their first animation, SamBakza finally released their last chapter of There She Is!! This concludes the series love adventures of Nabi and Doki (and their friends).

In this final step, Imagine, Nabi finally realized that their love should not be controlled by the world, went on a pursuit to his love, Doki before she reaches her plane at the airport and departs for good. On the way, the gang helped Nabi to reach his destination.

The song’s final note ends with a toast between the couple at the vending machine where they first met.

Note: This is the only flash video with English lyrics (with two more other languages) when enabled.

Feature Artist: John Su

Need more humour for your day? Then, here’s something that will definitely make you laugh.

“Subject: John Su”

Featuring John Su from the United States. He’s an artist that is skilled in using Flash program for both drawing and animation works. With such humour added into his works, his gallery is anything but dull. Some of his works, you will find them weird and even slightly bizarre. But never, certainly NEVER dull.

Make sure to check out his gallery at his deviantArt page. At the meantime, why don’t you enjoy some of the previews of his works below. Remember, clicking on the preview pictures will open another window (or tab depending on your browser settings) and will direct you to the source’s original location, the artist’s page.

“From something so cute…”

“…to something as cool as this.”

“And from something wacky…”

“…to something just downright bizarre!”

And here’s one of his great short animations as a treat.

Shoo Fly” - a short Mickey Mousing (a film technique used to sync the actions on screen with the accompanying music) flash animation made by John Su (also known as Mousekliks from other sites). The animation shows how Nelly (the girl in the animation) dramatically tries to get rid of a tiny yet annoying fly.

To watch this movie, click on the preview picture that will open another window (or tab). In that page, click on the link labeled ‘Watch this movie!’. Enjoy!

That’s all for today’s little featurette. Until next time!

Bag It!: A Yummy Masterpiece

October 27th, 2008 Rina Cat Posted in Bag It, Illustrations/Comics | 6 Comments »

Looks like our favourite purple bag is trying his hands on Rangoli decorating. Let’s see how he’s doing so far.

Rangoli is a popular traditional art form in India, using rice coloured in various pigment to create patterns and designs. Usually can be seen on the ground outside of homes at any times but it is also common to see Rangoli decorating during the 5-day festival of Diwali (over here, we call it, Deepavali).

Wishing you a Happy Deepavali (anyway)!

Feature Artist: David Gilson

September 19th, 2008 Rina Cat Posted in Illustrations/Comics, blog, feature artist | 3 Comments »

I just recently saw a movie trailer at a nearby cinema that featured ‘Bolt’ (Disney’s upcoming 3D animated movie) and was searching for more information regarding this movie. I was hoping to find some concept arts that might show how the movie was made and not just the summary of the movie like Wikipedia provides.

Bolt, Mittens and Rhino the hamster from Disney’s latest 3D animated movie, Bolt.

During my search for Bolt, the search engine somehow ended up showing me results about an article about Disney’s upcoming 2D animated (That’s right, folks! They’re still making traditional animation works!) movie called ‘The Princess and the Frog’. This movie was said to be released in December 2009.

First look on Princess Tiana, the heroine of Disney’s upcoming 2D animated movie, The Princess and the Frog.

My interest quickly switched and I was suddenly searching for information about this movie instead. With so many CG animated movies, the traditional animated ones are so under appreciated lately. I’d love to find out more about Disney’s upcoming movies in case they have more. I kept searching which finally led me to David Gilson’s blog, the featured artist for today!

Based on the info in David Gilson’s blog, he’s from Paris, France. Hence most of his blog entries are in French. But that doesn’t mean you can’t stop by his blog and have a look at his wonderful and adorable artworks.

His blog entries are mostly articles about animation works and animated movies. And this is also where he post most of his recent drawings.

Simply click the word ‘Messages plus anciens‘ at the very bottom of his blog page to see his previous entries.

Left image: David Gilson’s ‘chibi’ rendition of Princess Tiana.

It appears that drawing characters in ‘chibi’ form is his favourite genre. Below are some more sample of his adorable rendition pieces.

Bolt, Mittens and Rhino from Disney’s Bolt.

Lewis and Wilbur from Disney’s previous 3D animated movie, Meet the Robinsons.

Wall-E, Eve and Hal the roach from Disney & Pixar’s Wall-E.

Rina: Best animated movie of the year!!! Next to Kung Fu Panda!

He also draws really nice concept arts of various characters. I mean, just look below!

Official artwork of ‘The Princess and the Frog’? Nope. It’s just one of David’s fanart works.

You can find some more of his great works in his portfolio page. Since his portfolio page is also in French, I couldn’t understand anything that was said in there but someone from an animation forum quoted that David Gilson’s resume reveals that he used to work for Disney in the now closed Paris WDFA Studio.

Ah… That sort of explained his very ‘Disney-ique’ drawing style.
